The IB curriculum is challenging, but there are ways to conquer

Yes, the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme is indeed challenging – even harder than A-levels.

Completed over the last two years of secondary school, the rigorous IB exams involve six subjects, an extended 4000-word essay, and a Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course. Juggling all these while also ensuring that you achieve the best scores possible can be quite daunting.

This is precisely why acing the IB is not an easy feat, and it’s not surprising that many students end up with low grades e.g. 24 – 30 out of 45. That’s not all. About 10 – 15% of the students fail to even hit the 24-point mark, ending up without a diploma.

IB students are more likely to enrol in top universities in the UK

IB is tough. There’s no doubt about it. However, it is rewarding and definitely worth your time and effort as it opens a few doors for your child.

Statistically, IB students are more likely to enrol in top universities in the UK and receive significantly higher salaries than their A-levels peers. They are also less likely to drop out of universities and 40% more likely to be employees in professional sectors than retail.

Therefore, while your child might be a little overwhelmed by the EE, CAS, TOK, IA, etc., they’ll certainly reap the rewards of their hard work when they graduate from the programme.

Frequently Asked Questions

For your convenience, here are some frequently asked questions from parents and our answers. If you have any other questions or concerns please feel free to contact us.

“IB” stands for “International Baccalaureate.” The IB Diploma Programme is typically taken in the 11th and 12th grades, and the diploma is internationally recognised as proof of excellence for university admissions.

Students can choose to earn either:

A Certificate by studying fewer than six IB subjects

A Diploma by completing the full IB Diploma Programme

Depending on the hemisphere the student lives in, exams are conducted in May or November.

But it’s more than an academic programme. IB focuses on the development of the whole person and aims to create knowledgeable and caring people who strive to create a better world through their intercultural understanding and respect.

Both IB and A-levels are well-respected academic qualifications, and it’s more a question of personal preference.

With A-levels, your child will have the freedom to pick whichever subjects he or she likes without adhering to specific categories (e.g. 3 or 4 science subjects and no arts subjects at all) and there may be no coursework at all.

With IB, your child will have to study a fixed number of subjects in each category (Studies in Language and Literature, Language Acquisition, Individuals and Societies, Sciences, Mathematics, The Arts) along with compulsory core components that help shape them into a well-rounded student.

Both qualifications – IB and A-levels – are widely accepted and respected by universities around the world. Therefore, your child should choose the one that is more suitable for their abilities. Please feel free to contact us to discuss your concerns and needs!
